First edition of Linneaus’ first detailed catalogue of cultivated plants. During the three years Linnaeus spent in Holland (1735-1738) he produced several important works, of which the most important was Systema naturae in 1735. Linnaeus was staying mostly with the the Anglo-Dutch banker George Clifford (1685-1760) at his estate at Hartekamp and the Hortus Cliffortianus was published at the expense of George Clifford and contains Linneaeus’ definitions and synonyms for the numerous species in Clifford’s botanical gardens.

Finely bound in modern dark brown morocco by J. M. Romeo, Barcelona. Spine gilt and with five raised bands. Covers richly gilt. Marbled edges. Preserved in marbled box.
